This page has some projects that I’ve done in the past. I believe they show my growth as a person and thus I would like to show it.
Artifact 1: OEC Competition Model
This is the model toilet my team made. It was meant to be a proof of concept for the judges at the Ontario Engineering Competition. It showed all the features of the idea we came up with for the competition. This photo was taken the very first time it worked, the night before the competition in our team’s hotel room.
The topics that this artifact connects to in my COOP 2100 course is the use of engineering tools, individual and team work and communication. The use of engineering tools was in the design of this model, being made in AutoDesk’s Fusion 360 before it was 3D printed. The Individual and Teamwork component I will discuss in the next paragraph.
I learned that I have trouble communicating and asking for help with projects like these. I wanted to take everything on myself and be useful. After the competition, through communication with my team after the fact, I realized that what I was doing was not only pointless, but even working against me. I have made a point in future projects to ask for help and not take on more than I can handle. I still struggle, but I am learning. This project taught me a lot, and I am proud to have it here.
Artifact 2: Markham Campus Patio Project
This is the final 3D model me and my friend (who has given me written consent to put this on here) made for a proposed addition to the Markham Campus. We finished this at the end of our first year.
This connects to the COOP 2100 topics of Design and Communication, which go hand in hand. We made this project for a design course, ENG 1102, as our final project. The course was to design a solution to a problem on the Markham Campus, we did some research and found that there was not enough community space on campus, and designed this solution. It was also shown at a Markham Student Council Meeting by my friend, during which it was liked so much that the administrators at Markham Campus wanted to make it real. I was told the 3D model was helpful in communicating the design to the Markham Student Council.
I learnt that the presentation of a project is quite key in how it is received. Our 3D model allowed us to communicate better our vision for the Markham Campus, and likely helped others visualize it as well. Although it was a little difficult to make at times, it turned out quite well, especially when my friend added those shadings and textures onto the design. I will use this idea of communication for my future projects, and keep in mind how powerful it is.
